In an era of music where lyrics have become much more literal, it’s refreshing to hear a homegrown artist buck that trend. Su San’s ‘IN MY HEAD’ was born out of her mental health struggles during the pandemic lockdowns – but it’s hard to tell if the song is a cry for help or a self-destructive declaration.
One thing I do know is that ‘IN MY HEAD’ is hauntingly beautiful.
Self-produced, the track is a crescendo of brooding piano keys, eerie chanting, and a gorgeous performance from Su San herself. “Before the sun dawns, I must/Put on my shoes, and cut off my toes,” she sings in the final verse. Vivid imagery without an overarching narrative, but more than enough to drag you into her distressing world. It’s a song that’s more than the sum of its parts.
Released after a 2-year hiatus from music, ‘IN MY HEAD’ almost feels like a cathartic release compared to her previous releases such as Su Sun’s 2021 EP ‘wickedland’. Though as a fan of synth-heavy dark pop, I do hope she ventures into that sound once more.
